I am testing Umbraco 6.0.0 on a development server and overall performance is really bad. Umbraco is running really slow in the backend and sometimes also in frontend.
Umbraco 4.11 solutions runs really fast but v6.0.0 performance is totally dissapointing.
Not having any issues with backend speed, either live or in development - other than temp file generation which can slow things down if not cleared, which I now do every day just to make sure. Using SQL CE4 and IIS 7.5 locally, for what I need it works just fine, but maybe it could be your db or connection?
On a very general note, the speed issues have completely disappeared for me since about 4.10, the reason I answered your post was because I was surprised. Maybe try a quick install of CE4 and see if it makes a difference, try to flush out the problem if it is your db or IIS or some other.

A couple of issues related to performace were fixed in the recent patch releases (and 6.0.2 has just been released).

I will update to version 6.0.2 and post my experiences later.
System keeps running really slow after updating to 6.0.2 version while 4.1x.x solutions performs much better.
Afert testing v6 on different servers, I do not recommend using Umbraco 6 for production enviroments at the moment.

One page is slow, but this is due to a background image that I need to sort out.
Other than that, all seems ok at the moment. (despite my lack of knowledge)

Finally Umbraco 6.0.2 seems to be working fine using SQL Sever 2008.
What did you do to make it faster?
Im having performance problems when saving Doc types in 6.0.0.
What takes 2 secs to save in 4.7, takes 30 sec to 2 minutes in 6.0.0

Saving doctypes being slow was a bug in 6.0.0, if you upgrade to latest, it goes away immediately and is really fast, possibly faster than 4.7.
In 6.0.0 there is also an issue with inherited doctypes, so worth upgrading.
