Hi, I am trying to create a new website using Visual Studio. When I first run the site installation with Customize option, after selecting database it prompts to choose a starter kit (out of 3 available), or no starter kit. I would like to use a starter kit but not from those 3. There is a number of starter kits available freely on this site and some commercials too elsewhere.
My question is how can I use those starter kits, apart from the 3 appearing on installation? I know that we can remove and add new starter kits afterwards, but there is a problem currently with this functionality in Umbraco.
Any suggestions please? I just can not see anywhere on the installation to choose different starter kits to those 3 that appearring, thank you.
I have chosen No Starter Kit on installation. Now from Developer-> Packages -> Install Starter Kit, I can only see 2 that are available. I can see there is an option Install Local Package just below, but I don't want to play around without knowing what i's doing.
Can someone please suggest how to add a starter kit that can be found easily elsewhere?
First of all, I don´t think there a more than the 3 starter kits that you see doing the installation. There are people who have made some starter kits in the passed, but I don´t know if these are compatible with Umbraco 7.2. But to give you an idea you can see this https://our.umbraco.org/projects/starter-kits
Umbraco is open source which means that people can contribute to the project in different ways. One way is to create packages. This can be a free package or a commercial package or both where the free version has some limitations.
The Umbraco HQ has also some commercial packages that you could use, it could be the Umbraco Forms module http://umbraco.com/forms where you cutomer can make a contact form the the page, orther forms. You can see the Umbraco HQ add-on here: https://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Products/
The Install Local Package is when you for example want to use the ezSearch package https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/ezsearch on your site, you can download the package (the green button on the right side of the page) as a zip file, and the install it into your Umbraco installation.
You can install a local package doing the following
Select Install local package
Do not unzip the package but load the zip into Umbraco.
Hi Dennis, thank you for your very informative reply. Apologies if I mislead you, I meant that I can only see 3 starter kits when installing - no more. And my initial requirement was to add different starter kits that are not available within Installation process.
As I understood from the above, the best solution in my situation would be to create a new project with No Starter Kit, then add via the Packages. Basically adding some third party starter kit as a package. Can you please confirm that I understood you correctly or I missed again something?
I would create a new project with No Starter Kit, and then build up your website from the ground. And you could setup another installation with a stater kit to see how things are done in Umbraco.
I see, so you are suggesting for 'live' application to create without starter kit and reference the 'test' installation with starter kit and see how things are done, understood.
Sorry if I am nagging you but could you say that if I wanted some other starter kit that is not available on installation I should use add package functionality and not add starter kit. Is that the case? I ask this as I am not the decision maker here on the design.

And example of free package could be the ezSearch with this package you can easily make a search function on your site https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/ezsearch
If you one day need to make an e-commerce site with Umbraco, then there are some packages for this too. There are free and commercial packages an example of a free e.commerce package for Umbraco is https://our.umbraco.org/projects/collaboration/merchello Merchello, and to show you there are commercial packages too you could have a look at the uCommerce https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/ucommerce or Tea Commerce https://our.umbraco.org/projects/website-utilities/tea-commerce packages.

There are some starter kits, you could try to install the local gov stater kit to see if it works with Umbraco 7.2.x https://our.umbraco.org/projects/starter-kits/localgov-starter-kit

Yes to able to install e.g the local gov stater kit to see if it works with Umbraco 7.2.x https://our.umbraco.org/projects/starter-kits/localgov-starter-kit you need to download the package and install it as a local package.
