I have been using the APIs - a massive learning curve (Umbraco people are clever).
I started with v4 on my PC but when I got a server to play with, changed everything for v7.
I also played with the (free version) of CMSImport when on v4 - it got me 500 records and was really useful in the early days of using Umbraco.
Our old CMS had a few customisations, which meant CMSImport didn't get everything (although I've since exported our data to a table that CMSImport can use). I agree, it is a great tool, and I've not discounted using it again.

I've imported about 5000 records into Umbraco and can see some tables populated and others are not.
Having had a quick look, I can pretty much guess what each table is for, but is there any documentation?
