    Hello Umbraco,

I'm new to Umbraco, so I bought the Umbraco User Guide by Nik Wahlberg. In the book they suggest downloading a starter kit to see best pactices. So I downloaded the Business Starter Kit or should I say the Business Non-Starter Kit. After a frustrating week of not being able to get the thing working, not just the blog, which I noticed on here someone else had flagged as an issue but even simple changes to the images and text on the slider. I discovered that the Templates do not contain macro's to generate the content only hard html.

Is this a joke or a test by Umbraco to put you off? I was drawn to the Umbraco by the friendly, powerful and easy to use vibe from the community. At the minute I feel very disallusioned by it.

Does anyone have a working business pack?

Could anyone advise me on a good resource to learn Umbraco's best practices?

Or could anyone tell me how you store a link and to deploy on images and the like?

    Cheers!

    Jason

    Hi Jason

I created this package over a year ago as there was a need for something like this, in order to get people up and running quickly.

Fortunately, a lot has changed in Umbraco-land over the last year, but unfortunately with work commitments I haven't had the time to update this package very often at all.  Having said that, it should still largely work for people and speed up development but it is probably no longer the best way to get started with umbraco.

The templates do indeed contain macros to generate the html, so I wonder if you downloaded this starter pack, or did you choose the business starter pack as part of the umbraco installation process?  This came later than my package and although similarly named is a very different proposition.

It might be best to reinstall umbraco and choose one of the starter packs shown as part of the installation process in order to hit the ground running with umbraco.

Sorry if this hasn't been the best intro to umbraco - you'll find it very powerful (and easy) once you "get over the hump" and you'll also find that people on the forums will almost literally fall over each other in order to try and help you.

I'd recommend posting any specific questions you have on the forum, and perhaps starting with one of the built in starter packages.

    Cheers,

    Dan

    Hi Dan,

    Thanks for replying.

I installed the Business Starter Kit with the installation process, the templates in this contained html for the sliders. There were macros in it but I couldn't get them to work. :-(

What would you recommend to get started on Umbraco?

In that case it might be worth installing my business starter pack after all (they are different beasts, as mentioned above).  Alternatively you can try the more up-to-date but slightly unfinished BWSP 2.0 from http://geckohub.com/umbraco/Business_Website_Starter_Pack_2.0.zip (uploaded just for you!) - this might be a decent place to start, as after you install it you should pretty much have a full content managed site.  There are also a few good starter packs on the our.umbraco site, but you might want to start with something simple as opposed to diving straight in to bells & whistles.

I think you've already taken a good step by buying the umbraco book - that would have been great when I first picked up umbraco at version 3..

If you do end up installing one of my packages don't hesitate to ask any questions about them here.  I don't have a great deal of experience with the new installation-based starter packs (I prefer to roll my own!) so I can't help much with those unfortunately.

    Good luck,

    Dan
