What is missing from Merchello's Product Search API

I've seen a few threads start to pop up surrounding omissions in Merchello's product query API. I'd like to spend some time extending the current API for a 1.9.1 release.

The biggest one I know of is the ability to search by manufacturer.

    What else should be added?

I've only started the dive into merchello so forgive me if these are already in there but:

do you have search by SKU/ other unique identifier (ISBN etc)

search by product variant tshisrts by size or colour (or size and colour) for example

    Thats a start ..

How about a search for product type by price range?

@Ravi - search by SKU is there for both products and variants. In Merchello terms you second suggestion would be a search by product option and product attribute which I think would be cool (albeit tricky to do that performs well). It'll be easier once we open up shared options between products - that being said, I like a challenge =)

@Simon - a search by price range is a good one. At the moment we don't have the notion of a product type (albeit you must have a crystal ball as it is something I do have a been playing around with).

Barring product types, what would you expect a search by price range to return? If a product does not have variants, then it would return the product, but say a product has variants and only a few variants match, whilst other singular products also match ... would it make sense to return a the product which only certain variants match?

That's a really good one and is really straight forward. Added!

products on sale products that are marked as premium (special purchase) so we can push promotional items

products that are part of deals

effectively a bunch of special offers/discounts etc

Adding a query to find all products that are marked "On sale" through the product editor is not a big deal. Having the query return qualifying products for coupons is a different beastie and probably be too messy (especially as one starts to consider business specific use cases).

I'll add the straight on sale query to the list.

ATM, those sorts of things are handled via content. Still working out the concept to extend products directly in Merchello. Getting close. Good food for thought as to what people may try to do with it =)

Did this topic of variants with colour (Canadian spelling) options get addressed in the search functionality? For a garment site, search by colour seems like an absolute must. I anticipate my upcoming project to need to support the user selecting a collection and then searching by colour within that collection. Is this addressed in v2.3?
