A client has contacted me for a new project. Pretty great!
One of his requirements is, that they want to be able to perform split testing. Is this somehow possible in Umbraco, maybe with an add-in?
The site will also feature subscription-based products, and I'm thinking of using Merchello for this. It's important to be able to do A/B on both the products as well as regular content.
I am thinking that you could use the WWO - Google website optimizer, with this tool you can make A/B split tests https://vwo.com/?v=3, it´s not a free product but you can see prices here: https://vwo.com/pricing/
VWO sounds good, however I think the client wants to be able to do it themselves – or maybe they can? A different CMS I used had the option to use it directly in the back office – essentially creating a copy of the page, and splitting visitors between them.
Of course, I don't think VWO is that time consuming to set up, so perhaps the client are okay with paying me for the service as needed. :)

I know it's a little too late but there is a new plugin in development that addresses exactly the needs that you described. It's called uSplit and you can check it out here.

We are currently in a pre-release phase and offer redirect-based A/B testing at first (for free). We will add aditional features soon such as the ability to edit the variations in place and show the variations without redirect. Our aim is to make A/B testing an itegral Umbraco experience
so that even editors can set it up in the backoffice, without needing developers to plug in some magic code ;)
Seems that VWO and Google Website Optimizer are 2 different things. But seems Google Website Optimizer currently has been made a part of Google Analytics judging from the page one is redirected too when visiting the link found searching for it.
a few months ago we've analyzed the different options (also building it ourselves in Umbraco), but VWO is so much completer. You can change almost every thing you'll think off and the reporting is also superfancy.
My advice would be to save the costs of developing your own solution and use VWO for it.

Visual Website Optimizer is a great tool. It is so easy to set up and has a boatload of other features like heatmaps and segmentation.

The VWO is just a abbreviation of Google Visual Website Optimizer, as I know, so it´s the same product.
