I would love the ability to assign permissions to media items much in the same way permissions are handled for content nodes. The same browse, create, update, delete, sort permissions.
The Media Start Node works most of the time to restrict access but there are cases where you want to "share" media items across many users to enable them to insert media items but do not want to give them access to change that media.
Checked the forums and codeplex and didn't see this feature request listed, but may have missed it.

From the roadmap, it seems this functionality should be hitting the core Umbraco installation some time around the end of November, in version 6.0.0.
Until then, there are ways to member-protect your media files but as far as I know there's nothing to user-protect them.
Hope this helps. I can't wait to get this functionality - it's long overdue!
