If I upload a package to the "Projects" section of the website, I do not get a download count.
It would be valueable for me as a developer to see if many people download my packages, but also for people browsing.. if it's been downloaded a lot of times, it must be popular and could be good.
This, combined with the upvotes is a good way to see what the high quality projects are.
+1 to at least show the count to the developer/project owner. Not 100% sure about number of downloads being public as some could have a fair amoutn and others with not so many.
Just because a package could have a low download count, doesnt mean it is not good?!
Agree with Warren... download count doesn't mean a package is good or not, that's what the votes are for. A great package that solves a niche problem is still a great package. Still, I'd like to know at least basic stats as a project owner.

Hmm, yes, you're absolutely correct that is it not necessarily an indication of quality.
I just like everything to be as open as possible :-)
