web designer position at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

We have an opening for a web desinger who has a strong background in actual web page design (layout, color, fonts, standards compliance) and preferrably has some Umbraco experience.  Certification is not required.  This position is primarily a design position requiring HTML/CSS skills, some JSON/jQuery would be helpful.

This is not a .Net developer position.

    Classification: Communications Specialist 3
    Working Title: INE Web Designer
    Department: F-CEM INE General Research
    PCN: 453803
    Posting Number: 0062923
    Quicklink: https://www.uakjobs.com/applicants/Central?quickFind=75405

This is not a sponsored positon so you will already need to be authorized to work in the United States.  No relocation expenses will be paid.

The UA system provices an excellent benefits package with full medical (health, vision, dental) and a generous tuition wavier policy (12 credits per academic year for the employee and full credits wavier for dependents for all degree levels).

Fairbanks, Alaska, is a great place to live if you enjoy outdoor activities, hunting, and fishing yet a less attractive place of residence if you require metropolitan world-class entertainment choices.

There is no state income tax or state sales tax in Alaska.  There is also no local sales tax in Fairbanks exepct a modest tax on alcohol.  Property tax rates vary based on whether the property is part of the road/fire service area but are generally low compared to national averages.

Depending on your required standard of living rent can be expensive though the more adventures types chose to spend their first few months living in a log cabin without running water and an outhouse instead of a bathroom.  Log cabins can be rented for as low as $450/month + utilities depending on location.  The Universitiy offeres shower (free) and coin-op laundry facilities.

The fastest Internet access available in town is 3 mbps at a cost of $100/mo with many outlying areas only offering 1 mbps for $60/mo and some areas only providing 56k dial-up at ~$15/mo.

Flights to the Lower 48 are expensive averaging $700 for a coach round-trip ticket to Seattle which can reach $1,100 during the peak season/times.

Residents often supplement their groceries with subsistance activies such as hunting for moose and caribou (one moose does on average provide enough meat for a family of 4 for one year), as well as fishing for salmon (dip-netting, the quota for a family is 30 salmon and 1 king salmon) which for a family of 4 tends to last 9-12 months.  There are ample opportunities for blueberry and low-bush cranberry picking where  it's trivial to pick the equivalent of a 5 gallon bucket of blueberries within a couple of hours with a couple of people.

The environment in Fairbanks is not for the faint of heart where Winter temperatures can reach -50 F for a couple of weeks in January/February and Summer temperatures reach the upper 80's F.  We have a saying here that goes; We have one week of Spring, 90 days of Summer, one week of Fall, and the rest is Winter.

That's a bit exaggarated but the snow covers everything in white by the end of October and it doesn't melt till mid-April.  Winter months provide limited daylight with the darkest day only providing about 4 hours of daylight.

I am German and I lived here since 1997.  It does have it's downsides but the nature, the mellow pace of life, and the general lack of crowds make me appreciate Fairbanks.  My commute is less than 10 minutes each way and my neighbors are far enough from the house that I don't see or hear them if they have a party at their place.

If you have any questions about this job or life in Fairbanks please feel free to contact me directly using the contact info posted on the recruitment page.

The edit function seems to be broken, just want to add that this position requires physical presence in Fairbanks and is not a position that can be outsourced or filled by someone working remotely from elsewhere.  We do offer flex-time, 4/10, and perhaps other options to the right individual but physical presence in Fairbanks is required regardless.
