Go to http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx and install WebPI 5.0, open it up, install Umbraco CMS from within, following the instructions and leaving the application name empty while installing Umbraco as "Default Web Site".
Clicking either "Launch Umbraco CMS" or on "Finish" leads one to http://localhost/install which results in a 404, which makes sense since there's no install directory in the wwwroot.
There's an Install directory under Umbraco, but it too is empty:
So it seems to me that I followed the instructions just fine, yet the WebPI installer version is all jacked up.
I am curious whether this issue is user error on my part or lack of QAQC by whomever put it on WebPI. Either way it's incredibly frustrating that what was supposed to be a seemingly simple install can go so easily wrong.
I think it's due to the fact that the installation proces in v7 has been changed in the above is an uncovered scenario.
v7 has been out for 6 months and whomever is responsible for the WebPI releases didn't check whether it installs properly on Windows Server 2008 R2?
So after I posted my issue it seems like someone went in and made some changes to the WebPI-based installer.
If you try to install U7 via WebPI now it attempts to install SQL Server Express 2008 (asking for an sa password during deployment), Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Core, Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, a whole host of SQL Server 2012 management objects, and all kinds of assorted stuff that balooned the U7 install to a whopping 750 MB.
Installing 7 via WebPI fails with 404 etc.
Windows Server 2008 R2, clean system, patched.

Can you access the site if you just go to http://localhost ?
