Is it possible to use umbraco.presentation.UmbracoContext.Current.Request["app"].ToLower() == "content" in the event handler?
because i'm trying to figure out how to determine which section i am currently browsing.

Which event handler are you hooking into?
As there might be a better way to handle this - checking a node's document type, etc? As events could also be triggered from outside the back-office (e.g. "Publish at" documents).
