I know we have the two image cropper datatypes, both of which are excellent. I've got a pretty specific requirement from a client though. They want to be able to save crops of an image as a separate media item, rather than it being associated with the same image. Has anyone had any luck doing something like this before? As an interim, I'm looking at getting them to copy the media item they want to edit and use the Pixlr package to edit the images accordingly (gives them more options).

I'm not sure wether you can use one of the existing Image croppers to do this.
But maybe you can make your own cropping in a custom class where you can probably hook into the "New" event handler of an image when it's created to create the crops and create them as accessible nodes in the media library - You can see all possible events in this document: http://our.umbraco.org/wiki/reference/api-cheatsheet/using-applicationbase-to-register-events/overview-of-all-events
